We’re often asked if we have writing classes for kids. Our classes are primarily designed for adults, but Los Angeles has plenty of writing instruction opportunities for children and teenagers. Here are just a few. (The only programs with which we have personal experience are 826LA and WriteGirl.)
826LA
826LA is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write. Our services are structured around our understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. With this in mind, we provide after-school tutoring, evening and weekend workshops, in-school tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications. All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student’s power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in their individual voice.
WriteGirl is a Los Angeles-based creative writing and mentoring organization that spotlights the power of a girl and her pen. At WriteGirl, we match girls with women writers who mentor them in creative writing. WriteGirl is a thriving community with 200 volunteer women writers serving more than 500 girls annually. Every year, we produce dozens of workshops, panel discussions and special events to help girls get creative, get through high school and get to college! In fact, since 2001, 100% of our graduating seniors have entered college, many on full or partial scholarships.
Teen boys need role models, mentors, leadership skills and positive support to give them tools and strategies for managing the challenges they face in their communities, at school and at home. The Bold Ink Writers program offers creative writing as a vehicle for self-expression and personal development in a group setting, with accomplished writers as workshop leaders. Our workshops and events are designed to help young people cultivate their creative voices and develop the communication skills they need to attain academic and professional success.
We are a team of published authors, produced playwrights, and passionate administrators who champion Writopia's unique approach to creative youth development. Writopia Lab is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in New York City in April of 2007. We run creative writing workshops for kids ages 6 to 18. All of our workshops have a maximum of seven students and are led by a published author or produced playwright who has been fully trained in our time-tested methodology. In each of the past six years, our students have won more recognition for their writing than any other group of students in the nation. Classes in LA are held in Century City, Silver Lake, and El Segundo.
Word Up Kids teaches children the craft of writing so that they can tap into their inner genius. We offer private tutoring, public & at-home workshops, and live online classes and private lessons. We teach kids a simple writing process that makes writing easy and fun. Graduates of our program have more writing confidence, they no longer procrastinate on assignments, they are better able to organize their thoughts and express themselves in clear, rich sentences, their vocabulary and reading comprehension improves, and their teachers notice and appreciate the difference. In the process, children find their voice, and they discover themselves. It’s so easy for kids to get lost inside, and Word Up Kids is on a mission to offer this opportunity to every child with a desire to learn.
